 There was
already a human settlement in the territory in Prehistoric times, proof of this are the
Neolithic vestiges found in the cave dels Vergerars, that date back to the third
millennium before
Christ. The oldest written documents date from the end of the 10th century, when Salomó
belonged to the lordship of Castellví de la Marca.
 In 1214, Guillerma de
Castellvell donated the place of Salomó to the priory of Santa Maria de Banyeres that
wielded the place until the disentailment, in the 19th century. The monastery of Santes
Creus also ruled the places of La Polla-Rossa and Les Solanes , nowadays integrated in the
municipality of Salomó.
During the 12-14th centuries, kings Jaume the 1st and Joan the 1st protected the village.
During the war of the French, the Resistance troops were quartered in town and, later on
during the Carline Wars the village supported the Carlines and witnessed many battles
between both factions.
Towards the end of the 19th century, Salomó suffered the cholera and also the philloxera
plague that exterminated all the vineyards. Both catastrophes decimated the population,
which was partially compensated with the coming of the railway network.

 The
most important festivity is the town festival that celebrates the invention of the Saint
Cross
(May 3) and honours the Saint Christ, our town's Patron Saint. On August the 16th, we
celebrate the votive festivity of Sant Roc in gratitude to his intercession during the
cholera epidemics of 1885. The August Festival falls on the penultimate week in the month
to say farewell to the Summer and welcome the grape vintage.
The Three Wise Men Parade (January 5) closes the Christmas celebrations. |
 Church
of Santa Maria
History
 There is not much
information about the origin of our church. It is known, though, that Salomó had a
suffragan temple in 1214. Towards the end of the 13th century this temple had become a
parish church that contributed a sum to support the Crusades. The church like many other
churches in the bank of the Gaià River was part of the Bishopric of Barcelona until 1957,
when they were included in the Archdiocese of Tarragona.
Architecture
The church in its current shape is the result of a long transformation process of a
Romanesque church dated around the 12-13th centuries. Despite the building has Baroque
features, it still keeps a Romanesque portal from the former church. The first enlargement
work was the construction of the chapel del Roser. The following works date from the 18th
century, like the chapel del Sant Crist and the bell tower.
In 1998, there were started some restoration works to discover one side of the bell tower
and recover the Romanesque façade.
Chapel del Sant Crist
 The devotion for the
Sant Crist culminated with the construction of a chapel (around 1708 and 1715) with the
help of the 'Cofraria del Sant Crist', founded in 1961and lord Joan Nin i Vidal.
The chapel had beautiful sculptures of the Evangelists, a spectacular Baroque altarpiece
and many oil paintings by JaumePons i Monravà.
During the military raising of 1936 the church was set on fire and its Baroque altarpiece
was destroyed as well as some of the Baroque paintings.
The chapel was rebuilt in 1965 thanks to the collaboration of everybody in town. The works
were directed by architect Jordi Bonet i Armengol and artist Joan Rifà Benet , both
members of the 'Societé National des Beaux Arts de Paris'.
Leisure and Interesting Spots
The Casal Salomonenc, founded in 1972, provides the most important leisure offer,
specially in the Summer with the swimming pool and the sport field. In the last years,
Salomó has become an important cuisine centre, due to the cooking of the typical
'calçotada'.
The hunting society and the Moto-club also organise several social activities.
